Questions that some people are afraid to ask!

1.  Are you hearing impaired or deaf?   Most people would prefer to be called deaf or hard of hearing

2. Do all deaf people read lips?  Lip reading is very difficult. Many words look the same on the lips (Thursday and thirsty)

3. Do all deaf people use sign language? Some people prefer to use sign language as their first language other people prefer to speak if they lost their hearing later in life. Then English is their first language

4. If you’re deaf, can you talk?  It depends on each individual person.  Some people prefer to speak and other people prefer not to. It also depends if you were born deaf or learned language first and become deaf from illness or injury.

5. If you’re deaf, can you drive? OF COURSE! (Make sure you have a driver’s license!)

6. If you’re deaf, do you wear a hearing aid? It depends.  Some people have hearing aids or cochlear implants or prefer not to use anything.

7.  Do you know braille? NO! Braille is for someone who is legally blind.

8.  If you’re deaf, do you like music? Of course!  Now many music videos are captioned and signed in American Sign Language.

9. If you’re deaf , can you go to college? Yes!

10.  Is sign language international?  No : (

11. What do your students call you? Most students use the teacher’s first name.  It is still respectful- just easier to get a teachers attention here in the US. Sometimes they will use the teacher’s last name if it is easier to say.
